Since our District went 1:World, many educators in our District have earned Google Educator Certification. We wanted to let you know that Google has made a few exciting updates to this program for 2021-22. Before we dive into the changes, we want to reassure you that the Level 1 and Level 2 certification programs have stayed mostly the same. Both exams are still approximately 3 hours in length, and the exam costs remain the same ($10 for Level 1 and $25 for Level 2). Each certification still lasts 3 years from the date you pass the exam, and any certifications you've earned in the past will remain in effect until the expiration date. You'll still need a device with the Chrome browser and a webcam to complete the exams, and the exam security procedures are largely the same.
So, what has changed? Most of the changes relate to the exam questions themselves. In the past, a large portion of both the Level 1 and Level 2 exams consisted of scenario-based questions that required you to perform various tasks while logged into a temporary "exam-only" Google account. That system has been replaced by "active multiple-choice" questions, which are simpler to answer and do not strictly require you to perform live tasks. While you are answering the active multiple-choice questions, you'll still be allowed to open relevant Google Apps and try out various tasks in order to solidify your answer choice, but you can do so with your own Google account, which will hopefully save you a little time and simplify the testing process.
The content of the questions is also being updated to reflect updates to various Google Apps. If you're preparing to take the exams for the first time, or if you're getting ready to re-certify this year, you're in luck! In addition to the Fundamentals and Advanced Training modules, Google has also published brand-new task lists for each exam. We highly recommend you check out these task lists, rather than any older preparation materials or notes you may have from previous years.
All of the changes mentioned above became effective on September 1st, so you will most likely encounter the new exam format if you've registered for an exam after that date. Please let us know if you have any questions about certification. We're here to help!
