March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity — reading! The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — let's celebrate! (source)
Here are four ways you can celebrate with your students:
1. Make a book trailer!
Book trailers are fun to create and help students showcase their understanding of a text. Check out this blog post from WeVideo on how to accomplish this idea with your students!
2. Make your very own eBook!
Use Book Creator to have your students create their own eBook. Get started here. Check out this student example:
3. Have a celebrity read to you!
Storyline Online has a large video library of celebrities reading your favorite books! Here is a video of Oprah Winfrey reading The Hula-Hoopin' Queen:
4. Listen to an audio book!
All students have access to Sora, a reading application on Chromebooks. Sora has a huge library of eBooks and audio books for your students to use! Have students look for the icon below in the system tray on their device and then follow these instructions to get started.
